MATT THE RAT AND HIS 29 HATS
Story by Irene Akio
Illustrations by Matthew Walsh
Matt is not a typical rat. He never travels without a hat.
A few are tucked away in nooks, but mostly they are hung on hooks.
Some are covered in spots and dots, others made from tiny knots.
Some protect him from the sun, but most he owns just for fun.
The sparkly one he dons to dance. The beret he bought at a store in France.
One he got to fly a jet. (He won that hat in a poker bet.)
There’s a special one for baking pies and several hats for exercise.
The smallest one is for the pool, the biggest one for keeping cool.
Each head-topper is quite divine. Together they add up to twenty-nine.
Other rats look and stare, but Matt the Rat does not care.
He loves his hats with all his heart. He and they will never part.
